I recently installed MS-DOS 5.0 on my system. Everything worked great until I tried to run Windows 3.0 in 386 enhanced mode. I would get the Windows banner, and then I'd be dropped right back to DOS with no error messages of any sort. After talking with Microsoft tech support and playing around with my AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS files, I tracked the problem down to the following statement in my AUTOEXEC: SET PCPLUS=C:\APPS\PCPLUS This basically tells my copy of ProComm + v2.0 where to find its support files. I took the line out and Windows ran fine. I can live with ProComm + complaining every now and then about not finding a program, but I would like to know why an environment variable, especially one of a specific name, would prevent Windows from running in enhanced mode. I did check my environment space and there was plenty of room. I tried taking out other environment variables, but the PCPLUS variable seemed the only one to cause any problems. Any enlightened suggestions? -- Thank you and happy hunting! Actually: Ethan M.
