My response really doesn't apply to the DOS side of the original question, 
but it does apply to the "generic" (given system memory limitations) 
suggestion to run in "Standard mode"

I have seen this suggestion many times, but one thing that is never 
mentioned is the memory catch-22 ... I have 2M on a 386-so I run standard 
mode ... problem - I can basically load windows and MAYBE w4w (if the 
document is small enough) before I run out of memory ... in 386enh mode I 
can run swapfile (8M in my case) so that the system will at least run 
(load) more than onelarge application at a time ... sure it is 
EXCRUCIATINGLY slow & the disk thrashing (swapping) has a nice rhythm to 
it, but it does come closer to the windows goal of multiple applications 
open at once.
