Here's a problem I've discovered with DOS 5.0 and Windows. If you load Windows in Standard mode, bring up a DOS screen, press the Pause key, press any key, switch back to the Program Manager (Alt-Tab), then switch back to the DOS screen and my machine goes out to lunch. I've tried the same thing on two machines here at work, one with DOS 3.3 and one with DOS 4.01 and neither one experienced the problem. Perhaps the problem is with my particular machine or setup, rather than with DOS 5.0, but I tried several different configurations (load/not loading doskey [the command line retriever with DOS 5], not putting dos in the high memory area, loading/not loading smartdrv, using/not using loadhigh to load programs in upper memory blocks, etc.) but every permutation I tried produced the same result. I'll probably try to switch back to DOS 4.01 over the weekend and see if I get the same problem -- I never tried it in DOS 4.01 on my machine because up until now I've always run in Enhanced mode. But now I've been experimenting with Borland C++ protected mode version (BCX) which is why I've gone to Standard mode. The problem does not happen in Enhanced mode. If anybody as experienced the same problem or has a suggestion for what I might be doing wrong, please E-mail to kid@hpctdkz.hp.com. Thanks, Kevin Dietz
