[comp.windows.ms] Are Windows 4.0/DOS 5.1 in sight?

pfcouvares@amherst.bitnet (06/20/91)

With the new release of MSDOS 5.0, it seems that a corresponding update
to MS Windows would be due. Does anyone know if or when this update is
scheduled for release? I was considering buying MSDOS 5.0, but I am inclined to
wait for version 5.1 and the next version of Windows so all the bugs can be
worked out between them. Does anyone have any info or advice? Please email me
if you can help. Thanks!

Last I heard, Windows 3.1 would be released around the end of the year.

I received two flyers about windows 3.1 this week. One was for a free
"seminar" explaining the benefits of 3.1. The other was for a real
seminar for developers (about $500). At the latter a copy of the beta
release of 3.1 will be available.

I strongly doubt there are any significant bugs between Windows 3 and DOS
5.0; after all, they are both MS products, and DOS 5 had the largest beta
testing program MS (or anyone else?) has ever used. Problems are starting
to crop up with DOS 5, but these are obscure incompatibilities like Plus
Hardcards not working properly on 6Mhz IBM AT's (and only 6Mhz IBM AT's)
under DOS 5. Anything Joe Average User, or even Joe Average Power User, is
likely to do will work. I've used DOS 5 with Windows ever since the
December '90 beta release, and have had no problems.
