[comp.windows.ms] SMARTDRV.SYS, OnTrack

john@drd.com (John Horeth) (06/27/91)

I heard a rumor on another net that if you are using SMARTDRV.SYS and a disc
drive partitioned using OnTrack or some other disc manager (in my case Priam's)
along with Windows 3.0 in enhanced mode you could kiss it goodbye. They
say the culprit is SMARTDRV.SYS.

I know I originally heard that you needed to turn off the permanent virtual
disc and use the temp one by putting

VirtHDIRQ=off

in the 386Ehan section of system.ini.

I have been running like this for months and no problems. I am using
MSDOS 3.3. I also installed SHARE.EXE since I read somewhere that SHARE
helps out when using the multitasking capabilities of Windows.

My main question is how could SMARTDRV.SYS be the culprit. Does it not just
act as a read cache and not as a read/write cache like PCTOOLS PC-CACHE?

Please responde over the net since I am sure other might find any responces
useful.

Thanks.

P.S. I have currently stopped using SMARTDRV.SYS (chicken I guess).
