[comp.windows.ms] Mouse Droppings with CompuAdd 16bit VGA

joshia@buster.cps.msu.edu (Amaresh R. Joshi) (06/26/91)

Hi folks,
I'm having the following problem: the mouse
leaves a trail of dots on the screen in windows.

Specific Symptoms:
	- it only happens in VGA, switching to EGA gets
	rid of the problem
	- it happens in all three windows modes /s, /r, /386
	- it only happens to certain colors, the light gray
used as the default windows background is particularly
	bad
	- the dots are about half an inch behind the cursor point
	- the dots aren't randomly scattered but fall only on
vertical lines spaced about one quarter inch apart
	- sometimes when I unhide a window part of the screen
	is covered with these lines
-refreshing a window gets rid of the dots, till they
	start coming back
	- I get the same problem with
		MS Bus mouse
CompuAdd's serial mouse (a really lousy mouse!)
		Logitech Trackman
	-rest of the hardware:
		CompuAdd 25mhz 386
CompuAdd 16bit VGA card (type A)
		Nec 2a monitor

I've tried:
	- stripping the autoexec.bat and config.sys to the bare
	minimum
	- getting the latest drivers from CompuAdd's BBS
	-trying the three different mice.

Nothing seems to work. We have other CompuAdd machines here
with the same setup except for the monitor and card. So I figure
the problem is with the card or the driver. Any help will be
appreciated.

Amaresh,

This is incredible! You have exactly described a problem that I experienced
a while back after installing an STB Powergraph ERGO-VGA card. I finally
came to the conclusion that it must be a hardware problem, most likely with
the video card.

I decided to reseat all socketed IC chips on the VGA card. When I pulled out
one of the DRAMs I found three of its pins skewed outward. Not out of the
socket, just outward. I straightened them out and haven't seen the problem
since.

After reading your message I'm not so sure this was the cause of my problem.
Your VGA card may use the same chip set as mine and perhaps it's a problem
with that chipset.

Try reseating the ICs and see what happens.

You almost certainly have a bad graphics card. Borrow someone else's
VGA card. Chances are your problems will go away.

Amaresh,

I was talking to my Video card vendor (STB) yesterday looking for a new Windows
driver. I mentioned my previous problems with mouse droppings and that you
had the same problem on a different brand of VGA card. I told them what I
did to get rid of the problem and they were quite surprised that worked. They
said (as Joe correctly stated) that it's a hardware problem, most likely a
bad DAC (digital to analog converter).

Joe's right, get a new card.
