[comp.windows.ms] TVGA and Windows3.0

pearce@hpcc01.HP.COM (Lori Pearce) (06/25/91)

I just purchased the TVGA VGA 1024X768 4/16/256 colors and I have 1MB
DRAM on the board. I have a NEC Multisync 2A monitor (goes up to
800X600)

Can I run this in 256 color mode with the 800X600 resolution? How can
I get a WIN30 driver for this? Does anyone know what the drivers are
that are on Disk 3? I tried using them and they didn't work.

Has anyone had any trouble with the drivers in Disk 2 in the WIN3
subdirectory?

Any information about this monitor and board combo is appreciated. I
don't have access to ftp sites and the like, so I would need the
drivers on a disk

Thanks in advance,

I just got the new drivers for the TVGA board for Windows 3.0. They were
released in mid-May.

To get the drivers, just call the Trident bulletin board at 408-736-5483.
You'll have to register as a new user on their system if you haven't done so.

1) Go into the SIG (Special Interest Group) section
2) You are now in the General SIG section and you need to change to the
windows section. Press ? to get a list of the available sections.
3) Once you are in the windows section, read message number 102 and
then download the WINDRV.ZIP file. If you need PKUNZIP, it's supposed
to be on the bulletin board somewhere.

I'm going to try these files tonight. I'll let you know what I think of them.

I was also talking with a tech support person from Trident. He said for
Windows, not to use the TVGABIO.SYS driver as Windows does not use BIOS
calls. The TVGABIO driver will only take up 32k of memory and not provide
any additional performance inside of Windows. Now for DOS applications, the
driver may increase perfomance.

Also, the MAMODE.EXE program that changes the video buffer from 64k to 128k
should not be used for Windows either.

That's all for now.

Thanks for all the information I have received. Below is a quick
summary.

You can get the latest drivers from Trident Microsystems of Sunnyvale,
CA (408-738-3194) from their BBS (408-736-5483). There are two ZIP
files that you can download to get all the various drivers. They are
quite big (one is over 350K and the other is over 150K) and take a
long time to download even at 2400 baud.

I was also informed that you could get these drivers from
cica.cica.indianna.edu (correct??).

With 1MB I am able to run the TVGA in 800x600x256 color mode. So far I
have had no problems, but I am not sure I like the colors all that
much. I quess they will take some getting used to.

Thanks again for all the help,
