[net.auto] Are Japaneese Cars any good????

mas@drutx.UUCP (SchwarzMA) (02/19/85)

I have be evaluating cars on the lots of Japan's finest and America's finest.

I looked at the Nissan 300zx turbo, the creme de la creme of the Nissan line.
I looked at the Toyota Supra, the true American creation for Japan.
I looked at Izusu, Yuk!!!
I look at the American dealers.

My Analysis is: I would buy an American car over ANY Japan has to offer.

By the way does anyone know why Datson changed to Nissan??

I read it was because of lawsuits against Datson in Germany and the United
States.

I have 2 friends who won big cases against Nissan Motors, for problems in the
design of their cars that the designers knew about.

I have a 1978 Toyota Celica with 120,000 miles, no rust, and has needed
only one real repair in its life - new alternator brushes. Brake shoes,
tires, and other life-limited parts have been replace as needed. I
count the brushes as a real repair as it was done on the road in Idaho.

No one I know with an american car can claim anything near as good.
Five of six toyota owners known to me are very happy with their cars.
To me the question is reversed: why buy an american car?

The reason for the change to Nissan is not due to lawsuits but due to
the fact that the parent corporation has been Nissan for a couple of decades.
The want to establish a uniform image in all of their world markets. This
wasn't as important a few years ago before they began to grow. Thus they
have decided to bite the bullet and change now.

The name Datsun came from the original company. It was named DAT (as I
remember the story). They produced a car which was called DAT-son meaning

son-of-DAT. That became Datsun (with the 'u') in the west which I understand
has uncomplimentry meanings in Japanese.

You sound like a rabid 'buy-American' nut. You obviously looked at the
Japenese cars with the forgone conclusion in your mind that you would pick
the American. That is fine if you wish to pay for the repair bills. I have
an '83 Honda Accord with 39,000 miles, and not a single repair bill yet.
(simply change oil, etc.). I have a co-worker with the same age K-car and
has had it in for repairs more that a dozen times. He even had to have the
heater core replaced on a car less than two years old!!!!!

The statistics speak for themselves. Read consumer reports. Then decide
the econimics of the matter. (Lest you think I a rabidly Anti-american, the
Honda was built in Maryville, Ohio...American workers can make a quality product
when managed correctly. Detroit may yet learn their lesson.)

I came to America about a year ago. I had a mind to buy an American car, as
it would probably the only chance I would ever have of owning one. I looked
and looked for an American car that I liked. I only had about $10000 to
spend so the Corvette I liked very much was somewhat out of my price range.
After going round many dealers who showed me lots of cars, I wondered if I
would ever find one which was even partly loaded for the money. In the end
I gave up and started looking at Japaneese cars. What a breath of fresh air.
The cars were nearly always fully loaded as standard, the interiors of the
cars were no where near as bland, and on the hole they looked better ( In
MY opinion) than the other cars that I had looked at.
Needless to say I opted for a Japaneese car (84 Mitsubishi Cordia LS). I
was some what disapointed that I could not find a domestic car that I liked
enough to be happy with for two years (the length of time I will be here).
I have driven many domestic cars, I have enjoyed driving them for a short
period of time, but would not want ANY of them for more than two weeks.
Maybe part of the reason is that I am used to the European style of car.
Most of them have, like the Japaneese cars, many options as standard. That is
one reason why there are a lot of Japaneese cars in Britain.
I will say as a final note that I have owned several cars, all but my last
one prior to comming to the States (a Fiat Strada) were Fords. A 1966 Ford
Cortina MK1, 1971 Ford Capri GT, and a 1974 Ford Capri L.
Why can't Ford USA make cars as well as Ford UK??????????

This posting is very biased against the US domestic cars. NO FLAMES PLEASE.
