[net.auto] Oil in gas: THE SOLUTION

mff@wuphys.UUCP (Swamp Thing) (03/06/85)

Finally, after weeks of finding quarts of gas in my oil, it's fixed. First,
thanks for all the suggestions (well most of them, anyways). After checking all
sorts of things on my 68 Volks Type III, I happened to be crawling around
underneath it (something VW owners do quite frequently), when I noticed that
the thermostat which controls the air flaps for the cooling fan was not to be
seen. Not only that, it wasn't there. Well, I have only owned the car for about
8 months, and I hadn't noticed it before. Anyways, putting one of these on has
fixed the problem. Apperently, in cold weather, this engine doesn't vaporize
the fuel very well when the engine is cold. The next year (69), this problem
was fixed by adding on a cold-start injector on the air control box. At any
rate, mine doesn't have one. And, with the lack of a thermostat, the car never
really gets warmed up (especially on short trips, which is what most of my
driving consists of), so lots of unvaporized fuel was getting dumped into the
cylinders, which then leaked into the crankase. SO, it's fixed. However, I
still hate my car. Oh well, you can't have everything.

P.S.: As a special bonus to all you people with spelling fetishes out there,
there are six intentionally-misspelled words in this article. A prize will be
awarded to the first person who can find them all.
