Info-3b2 Digest, Number 50 Monday, January 9th 1989 Today's Topics: arc521 Upgrade questions ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Sat, 7 Jan 89 16:13:35 est From: Danny Quah <cogsci!ucbvax.Berkeley.EDU!ames!heretic.MIT.EDU!ll-xn!dquah> Subject: arc521 [] Has anyone brought up arc521 on a 3b2 running SysV r.3? There may be an inconsistency in my system header files... I don't have dirent.h in /usr/include but in /usr/include/sys instead... Further it doesn't seem to define DIR, opendir, readdir or any of that other stuff in directory(3X). (Or is it simply that my documentation is out of date? I see the same configuration [roughly] on my 3b1...) --Danny (dquah@dolphin.mit.edu, dquah@athena.mit.edu, dquah@heretic.mit.edu, [uucp:]...mit-eddie!e5274b!dquah) Dept. of Economics MIT, E52-274b, Cambridge MA 02139. To anticipate a few questions, here is a small summary of the machine I am currently sysop on. History ------- We got the machine of (I think) AT&T Europe (in guise of OLIVETTI) in (I think) 1985, since AT&T would like a foot in thru the door in the swedish academic world. (Education footnote - All students at LTH (Lund Institute of Technology) was until this year educated in CS with VAX/VMS, now some Unix courses is held and by the end of this year almost all CS will be Unix and workstation based) All Unix machines here at the school is using a some sort of BSD-variant(SUN-OS etc...) except this machine. (Perhaps I should rename it Little Annie :-) Hardware -------- Augias is a 3b2/400 with 1M memory, with standard disks and SYSV 3.0 And now for some questions! Memory upgrade -------------- - What memory-boards should I use? I heard a rumor that there is pirate boards, which is should be a lot cheaper. Does anybody know something about quality, prices etc.. Disk upgrade ------------ - What pirate disks is reliable? - What hardware spec for the disks is necessary? - What prices? And why do I not contact AT&T (OLIVETTI) Sweden with the questions? Well, first of all I am tired of hearing "UNIX, what kind of typewriter is that?" and secondly the last thing I heard about about Olivetti Sweden is that the two persons that was knowledgeable about Unix was either fired or quit.
