[u3b.misc] Is the 3b15 dead?

paul@unhtel.uucp (Paul S. Sawyer) (06/15/90)

OK, how about the 3B15, or its close relatives the 3B5 and 3B4000 (or
is that 3B15/4000 - I think I've seen it both ways). I am running one
as a departmental computer, although when it was sold to us (as a 3B5,
in 1985) AT&T pictured it as only running their billing application....

I was lucky, recently, to be able to take advantage of the economy lag
(and lag in 3B15 popularity? B-) to buy a 3B15 for parts - - I added
memory, disk drives, and a second tape drive (although still 1600bpi
on an ITC, not ATC) so my system is still alive. (To be fair, these
items are, of course, still available brand new from AT&T.)

My next logical step would be to connect to the campus-wide Ethernet
via TCP/IP, as I currently use 9600 baud uucp for communicating and
printing large files. The hardware seems to be the SBNI available from
AT&T. A recent discussion here, however, seems to say that their $12K
TCP/IP software is not the way to go.... Is anyone out there running
a 3B15 with a TCP/IP that works for them? Is there any TCP/IP software
on the net that has been successful on a 3B15? I am running SysV,
release 2.1 for the forseeable future...

Thanks, all.
