[is this still necessary?] From the owner's manual, 1984 Jeep Cherokee: "TIRE CHAINS OR TRACTION DEVICES: Most Cherokee and Wagoneer models have sufficient tire-to-body clearance so that tire chains may be used. Install chains on the rear tires only. Follow these recommendations to guard against damage and excessive tire and tire chain wear: --Do not install tire chains or traction devices on models with P215/75R15 size tires." 1) Okay, can anyone tell me why? I checked with a couple of dealership service managers, they don't know. The dude at the Zone Office couldn't tell me either. Actually, he asked me for the tire brand (Michelin), and then told me to check with them. Well, the owner's manual doesn't say anything about the BRAND being a problem. The recommended sizes are P195/75R15, P205/75R15, and P215/75R15, but the prohibition against chains only applies to the P215. 2) Chains on rear tires only? I'd have thought you would put chains on the FRONT tires if you're 4-wheelin'. And why not all four? 3) Any comments on the new type "cable chains"? ADthanksVANCE, as they say.
