[comp.archives] West Coast X Archives and X11R3 via uucp

turner@daisy.UUCP (D'arc Angel) (11/05/88)

[I just saw your posting on the new format and I will convert this to
that format asap, meanwhile here is my submission to comp.archives]

(By jove I think he's got it...)

The West Coast X Archives are now available via anonymous uucp login,
many thanks to Lee Daniels and Bob Peligreno for helping me get it
right. The archives are accessable by Telebit or 1200/2400 baud modems,
a sample L.sys entry might be:

   daisy ACU 19200 14159674718 "" \d ogin: UXarchiv
daisy ACU 2400 14159674619 ogin: UXarchiv
   daisy ACU 1200 14159674619 "" BREAK ogin:-BREAK-ogin: UXarchiv

I recommend that you download the file

	   /usr/spool/uucppublic/Xarchive/ls-lR.Z

first as it contains a list (in compressed form) of all of the files
   in the archive.

X11R3 (both core and contrib) is now in the archives under Xarchive/X11R3,
since the compressed form of X11R3 is roughly 36Mbytes, please do the
downloading one file at a time to give other people a chance. What I
mean is download each file with a seperate uucp command rather than
downloading a whole directory with one uucp request.

To answer a few often asked questions....

   1. There is no ftp access to these archives, they were created explicitly
for those people that had only uucp access.

   2. Please do NOT mail me tapes, I know that I originally said that I would
accept mailed tapes and return them with the archive contents but the truth
is that the best of intentions lead to the worst of execution, I just don't
have the time. Those people that have already sent me tapes, I will do my
best to get them out with X11R3 asap.

   3. the pc server for X11R3 is in the distribution, it is referred to as
veryoldxpcserver and I am told by several people (after I offered to
distribute it) that it doesn't work and is actually incomplete.

   4. For those people that are within driving distance of Daisy Systems,
if you leave a tape (2 sun carts or 1 reel) I will make a copy of the
archive for you and leave it back at the desk for pickup with NO
   promise of turn around time.
