[comp.archives] Need Anon UUCP Acces To Internet Archive

scs@itivax.UUCP (Steve C. Simmons) (11/05/88)

A friend (steveb@mtu.edu) has an unusual problem. MTU isn't on the
Internet, but does let you access a gateway to it. When you get the
Internet Gateway, it let's you do a telnet command to Internet hosts.
But since the gateway isn't a login-able host, you can't use ftp. He'd
like to use uucp. We have the appropriate chat scripts, and he is in
fact accessing other sites he has uucp connects to this way, so we know
it works.

Is there any Internet archive site out there willing to permit anon
uucp? My apologies if this has already been posted; the issue just
came up.

Well, it appears that what you want is a uucp site that carries
whatever it is you want to find on the internet. If so, there are
plenty of sites, like the one that just posted (the West Coast X
Archives).

If, on the other hand, you are looking for a site that translates
your uucp request into an ftp access, I dunno. Let's see if anyone
has an answer.

Thats one of the things that the connect charge for uunet covers.
You can send mail and ask that a file be ftped for you and uucp'd
to your machine.

The idea I have in mind is a gateway that one could send to, that
knows about ftp and could automatically translate a uucp-generated
request into an ftp access and then forward the retrieved files
through uucp. From what I understand of ftp, that can't be done to
arbitrary sites, but I could imagine a gateway that knew about a
particular set of archive sites.

Supposing that the gateway were called ftp-relay and it knew about
archive foo.bar, one would do anonymous uucp to that archive with a
command like:

	uucp ftp-relay!foo.bar!/pub/file.Z ~/file.Z

presuming that one had an L.sys for ftp-relay.

Is this a reasonable idea? Does anyone know of anything like it?
