[BTW, Joe, your reply to address had .UUCP after it. You need to fix your rn source. Send e-mail for info. tww] For those folks who can't build nameservice on their machine, and need to discover the internet number of a site mentioned in news I have put up the following service on ccnext.ucsf.edu: telnet 128.218.1.109 5555 (type in the host name) <program returns the internet number, or one of about 5 error messages> Connection closed. This is a temporary kluge until folks are able to do the following: Everyone with BSD is much encouraged to re-link your programs with the nameservice routines, available via anonymous ftp on ucbvax.berkeley.edu 128.32.133.1 or ucbarpa.berkeley.edu 128.32.130.11, in a file in ~ftp/pub/4.3/bind.4.8.tar on either machine. This package contains a lot more than just the resolver routines, but they are all you really need, in bind/res. You don't have to run "named". This package produces a library called libresolv.a which you link with things like talk, ftp, telnet, etc. When you have done this you'll no longer need the /etc/hosts file on your machine. It may be a permanent solution if no one writes resolver routines for VMS and other operating systems. I'll be happy to supply the source of the server, please put this up on other sites. My service MAY disappear without notice. Joe Stong jst@cca.ucsf.edu
