[net.auto] Radar Detector Legality

cxs@ihuxl.UUCP (c.j. spies) (03/12/85)

Does anybody know which states have laws banning
radar detectors? I know the FCC allows any individual
to receive any (except in the interest of national security)
radio frequency but if I'm on vacation, I don't want to go to
court to fight it.

Radar detectors are illegal in the state of Michigan. There
are signs posted as soon as you hit the borders that if they
(the police) spot one, that they will confiscate them.

Radar detectors are legal in Michigan, as of about a year and a half ago.

Does anybody know how the law is applied in states which prohibit radar
detectors (Virginia is one) with regards to permanently installed (under-the-
hood) units? It's certainly not very practical to remove the unit from the
car when crossing into such a state, yet I doubt it is sufficient to simply
turn it off.
