I have a 1968 Porsche 911S soft back window Targa with the car- burated 2.0L engine. It has spent most of it's life in storage and has only about 60K mi. but is burning a considerable amount of oil. There are two possible reason for this (so I've been told); the valve stem seals may be shot because of using ?harm- less? unleaded fuel or the bottom of the cylinders have been pit- ted from condensation during long periods of storage. The reason doesn't really matter, a rebuild is at hand. My experience in rebuilding engines is limited to a small block chev and a 4 cyl ford tractor. Is the 911 something I should tackle or should I have it done? What should a "complete" re- build cost? As long as it's going to be torn down, are there any up-grades that should be done (I've heard about the advantages of the 930 style chain tensioners)? If I do it myself, I want to get a good engine stand. Is there one that is especially good for a Porsche engine? Good sources for parts? Any recommendations or comments would be greatly appreciated.
