Thank you to all who responded to my problem, especially those who read my entire posting and thus realized that I had already checked the adjustments and freedom of motion. Recapping, the door would move only about six inches at a time, taking several attempts before it opened. The problem occurred downward also. Force and travel adjustments were no help and the door moved freely. As a few people suggested, the fault was in the logic board, the so-called RPM detector. Replacing this part ($15 plus labor) did the trick. It now works fine. But getting it fixed was another story. I brought the head in and described the problem, including the temperature dependency. I told the serviceman I suspected the logic board. He said the IR sensor was bent so that it couldn't detect properly, so he straightened it out and told me it checked out OK. When I asked why it happened so suddenly, and how could it bend all of a sudden, he had no answer, but he assured me that it was working fine. I reinstalled it, and it was worse than before. I took it back, raised hell, and got them to replace the circuit board. It then worked fine. I now have a working opener. Would I buy another Sears opener? I really don't know. It seems to have better features, regardless of the price, but I question its reliability, especially since at least three other people on the net have had the same problem.
