For those who are not aware of it, I would like to descibe the Mac console emulator "uw". For Macs connected to a SUN (or other BSD Unix machine) through a serial port, it permits as many as 7 distinct window shells, graphics or text, in the manner of a SUN console. The various windows are multiplexed through the single serial line, each running simultaneous shells on the host machine. Especially at 19200 baud for a directly connected machine, this is a tremendous improvement over standard emulators. For those who are interested, the source code for UNIX and the MacBinary executable are available via anonymous FTP from wuarchive.wustl.edu (128.252.135.4). For those who are already familiar with "uw", I am looking for a version of it which has been modified for SYS V. We have an IRIS Personal running IRIX 3.2.1 (SYS V with BSD'isms) which we would like to set up with "uw". However, the mods don't look all that easy. I'm attempting it now but it may take a while since I am busy and this isn't my forte; maybe you can spare me the agony.
