NNTP is the Network News Transfer Protocol, which is used to communicate USENET news over TCP/IP. Since many systems cannot afford the disk space to store all net news locally, this program can be used to communicate with a cooperating news server system to read and post net news. News articles are fetched on an as-needed basis and are stored on the client system only while they are being read. NEWSRDR is not a port of UNIX-based news readers. It is written strictly for VMS and provides an interface that VMS users should find reasonably comfortable. Most of the commands in NEWSRDR should be familiar to VMS MAIL users. NEWSRDR is written entirely in BLISS-32. It uses the callable MAIL interface, and therefore requires VMS V5.0 or later to run. It should work with CMU TCP/IP V6.3 (patched to run on VMS V5) and V6.4. Refer to the NEWSRDR documentation for specific system and user requirements. V2.1-6 includes the following new features over previous versions, including: * "Kill" files are now implemented (SET IGNORE). * Cross-posted articles are now automatically marked seen (when Xref header present in article). * DIRECTORY command has been expanded: list articles by subject, keywords, and/or author; list only seen or unseen articles. * Unseen article count now displayed during updates and in DIRECTORY/GROUP. * Improvements made to interface to correspond better to VMS MAIL; keypad key definitions also supported. * READ/THREAD and SET SEEN/THREAD commands added for following threads within a newsgroup. ================================================================================ NEWSRDR is available via anonymous FTP on vms.ecs.rpi.edu [128.113.5.15] and vms2.ecs.rpi.edu [128.113.5.14] in directory [ANONYMOUS.NEWSRDR] (executable and documentation) and [ANONYMOUS.NEWSRDR_SRC] (source and objects). People who have obtained the test versions V2.0 through V2.1-5 should obtain V2.1-6 for the latest features and bug fixes. For non-Internet sites, NEWSRDR is also available through E-mail distribution from Fileserv@vms.ecs.rpi.edu as packages NEWSRDR_EXE, NEWSRDR_DOC, NEWSRDR_OBJECTS, and NEWSRDR_SOURCE. To request a package, place the command SEND <package-name> on the first line of the body of the message. Please try to limit your requests to no more than one package per day. Thanks. ================================================================================ Thanks to John Price at UCLA for his beta testing efforts and suggestions. -- Matthew Madison, Systems Programmer | "First they built the world's standard.
