[net.auto] The Ultimate Automobile

I have recently seen the Ultimate Automobile, the Final Expression
of all that is elegant and stylish, as interpreted by Detroit. This
marvel of mechanical panache was observed last night in Princeton,
N.J., parked (where else) in front of the Nassau Inn.

The car was a Cadillac Seville (I think that's the model),
approximately new. That is the Caddy model with with the
protuberant ass feature on the back end, supposedly to imitate
a separate trunk. This is one of the most incredibly bizarre
body styles to come out of Detroit recently, but this lily was
gilded beyond belief. To begin, it had the "trunk strap"
feature. This is a set of fake belts, complete with buckles,
but rendered in chrome and totally functionless. Then the
car had one of those new elaborately faked convertible tops.
This is the one that starts with a fiberglass shell that has
ridges to imitate the convertible top bows. The covering is
a heavy fabric, with thick seams at the edges to imitate the
wires that hold a convertible top down onto the frame.

But wait! There's more!

The feature that really blew me away, that left me weak-kneed
on the sidewalk, eyes goggling and mind reeling, was the
transparent sunroof (!!!) that was installed in the usual
place, right through this imitation convertible top. I mean,
like totally awesome! We're talking class with a capital C!

Match that, Japan! Detroit still knows how to do some
things better than anybody else in the world!

The only thing worse than the Cadillac Seville's mere existence is
the fact that they sell SO MANY of them! What's the appeal? The
only thing I can think of is "be the first on your block to own this
ugly car". Oh, and you've also seen, I presume, the Lincoln counter-
part? Almost identical to the Seville.

I guess if I HAVE to have a car like that, I can always run to the
nearest road construction site in my '72 Torino and have a steam-
roller ride up the back end. But I'll just have to go without the
sunroof in the fake convertible top. :-(
