I am happy to announce the availability of GNU Smalltalk, version 1.1.
Version 1.1 is a substantial improvement over version 1.0. Some
of the new features are:
* STIX -- SmallTalk Interface to X. A working implementation of an interface
from GNU Smalltalk to the X procotol layer. Includes example program.
* Smalltalk interactor mode -- allows for incremental, compile or execute
while editing source code. Similar to traditional Smalltalk or
Lisp machine development environments, but runs under GNU Emacs.
Improves productivity tremendously!
* Binary image file size has been reduced substantially. Other GC related
things improved as well.
* Readline interface for easier use outside of Emacs.
* Improved error handling and recovery, including control-C handling.
* Installs in subdirectory, instead of current directory.
* Manual has been improved and extended.
* Ports to other machines now include:
Apollo 3000,4000,10000
Atari ST
DECStation 3100
Encore Multimax
HP 9000/300 series and 9000/800 series
Interactive 386 System V.3
Sony News 1810
Sun3,Sun4
NeXT
Pyramid
Sequent
SGI Iris-4D
Tektronix 431[5-7], 9?
VAX
GNU Smalltalk 1.1 may be anonymously FTPed from prep.ai.mit.edu in
pub/gnu/smalltalk-1.1.tar.Z, and soon from other sites that have
version 1.0.
My heartfelt thanks to all who have contributed to this version!!!
Steve
