I recently posted an article requesting advice on installing a stereo in my '85 Cavalier. I've decided to do it myself. My car is the type 10 coupe with the "cockpit" type console. The trim plate looks like it should just pull off, but several attempts at gently removing it have left me wondering if there aren't some hidden screws. My owners manual of course has nothing about this, but says that I can send away for a service manual for $19.95. Has anyone installed a stereo in a type 10? If you have please mail me the info I need. If anyone has the 1985 service manual I would appreciate it if you could check and see what the deal is with installing the unit. Its not that I don't want to buy a manual but I would have to mail away for it and God knows how long it would take to get to me. Meanwhile my stereo is sitting in the box and I want to install it. I checked with a local place that installs them and they wanted $60!! I also checked with my dealer and he was no help, as expected. He said I could go to the service department and look at their manual. Yeah, right. Thanks for any and all help. Art Steinman Path..houxu!ahs

The parts department of a local Chevy dealer (if your dealer isn't giving you any satisfaction) should have the service manual in stock. The other alternative is to make a credit card order for the manual, there *should* be a phone number listed in your owners manual, and have them Federal Express it. I had a similar problem with my car ('85 Toyota MR2). I bought a burglar alarm system and needed the service manual before a friend (who has an MSEE) could install it, but the dealer didn't have it yet (I purchased it in February), nor was it available from the Toyota Publications distributors yet... It hadn't arrived from Japan yet! The service department offered to let me see theirs, as soon as their copy arrived. Nice guys! But I have the service manual now, and the alarm system is in too. (You should check installation prices for alarm systems if you want to stress-test your pacemaker!) I'm still waiting for the detailed electrical systems manual, though. Hope this helps. (You are not alone.) Enjoy your car! Cindy Paloma -- Cindy Paloma UCSD Academic Computing Center, C-010 La Jolla, CA 92093 [...]!sdcsvax!sdcc3!paloma paloma@ucsd.arpa
