In today's (7 June) NY Times, Pepsi has a full page ad saying, in part, "nearly half of those who have tried new Coke say it's time to switch from Coke...and the overwhelming majority say they'll switch to Pepsi." Not me (I'll take Royal Crown if I can't get the Real Thing), but I think (hope) Coke's marketeers are getting the message. Pepsi also reports their May sales were the highest monthly figures in their history. Protest hint: Coke has an 800 number on the side of the cans (1-800-GET-COKE). Let's take them at their word. Coke: it's the surreal thing. Even The New Republic is in on this Coke thing. They did a blind tasting and the results were ambiguous but not encouraging for the new Coke. This morning's paper carried an AP wire story saying that Coke admits it's getting huge amounts of negative flack, but the president of Coke claims a lot of the callers are accepting free coupons for the new stuff. I suggest you call 800-GET-COKE and when they offer you a coupon ask if it can be used to buy Pepsi or RC or Dr Pecker... -- D Gary Grady Duke U Comp Center, Durham, NC 27706 (919) 684-3695 USENET: {seismo,decvax,ihnp4,akgua,etc.}!mcnc!ecsvax!dgary

When I called the GET-COKE number last week, I had about a 20 minute talk with the answerer. She sounded terribly concerned that I didn't like the New Coke, and admitted that results were "mixed" to say the least judging from the phone calls. She didn't say anything about free coupons, but she did want my name and address, so we'll see what shows up... --Lauren--

In article <1441@ecsvax.UUCP> dgary@ecsvax.UUCP (D Gary Grady) writes: >Coke claims a lot of the callers are accepting free coupons for the new >stuff. Coke offers to send you a disinformation packet; the coupon seems to be included. Talk about doublespeak! The booklet says Coke is [defined to be] the most popular cola. Since New Choke came out more popular in tests, New Choke is [by definition] "Real Coke" and Old Coke is a pretender. Guess those Pepsi ads have a point....maybe they should show the Coke market research department walking off a cliff. --Bob Hofkin
