Announcing the Availability of MacOberon via FTP
------------------------------------------------

An implementation of the Oberon System is now available for Apple
Macintosh II computers. MacOberon implements the complete Oberon
development environment as a single process under MultiFinder.
A Macintosh equipped with a MC68020 or better is required; the
MC68000 processor is not supported. A minimum of one megabyte of
memory is also suggested.

Oberon consists of a compiler for the new programming language by
Prof. N. Wirth, a direct successor of Pascal and Modula-2, as well
as an extensible Operating System written in that language. In the
Macintosh implementation, the Oberon system interface is modelled
on top of the existing Macintosh OS. The libraries of all Oberon
implementations originating at ETH (NS32x32, SPARC, MIPS, MC68020)
are identical; applications are completely portable. MacOberon also
provides a flexible interface for direct calls to the Macintosh
Toolbox.

MacOberon is available via anonymous FTP:

  ftp neptune.inf.ethz.ch (internet number 129.132.101.33)
  name: anonymous
  password: <your-e-mail-address>
  cd Oberon
  get readme

The ASCII file "readme" tells you how to go on from there.
Complete documentation of the system, as well as the report on the
programming language Oberon are included in the distribution.

Note:
-----

Last week, I announced that I would be posting MacOberon onto the
newsgroup Comp.binaries.mac. Unfortunately, I just got notice that
my post bounced for exceeding 10000 lines. It took our mailer
over a week to figure that out. Rather than splitting and posting
again, I have arranged to have a permanent FTP site for offering
MacOberon and future updates. I suppose this will be at least as
convenient as the other distribution route to most users.
