It sounds like you got the version of XRN that came with the X11R4 tape
from MIT.  There were some very serious bugs in that version (as you
have found).  You can get the most recent version of XRN (with the
bugs you mentioned fixed, many new features, and I'm sure a few new
bugs) from shambhala.berkeley.edu via anonymous ftp.  The file is
pub/xrn/xrn6-10.tar.Z
