[net.auto] Headlights -- when to use them

mat@hou4b.UUCP (Mark Terribile) (04/04/85)

Time to repeat a ``OH! thank God!'' story:

A couple of years ago I was driving to work in a heavy fog. I
was travelling at about 35 and about to make a smooth left hand turn
across the roadway into the (angled) driveway in front of the building.

Researchers who study such things way that we can detect motion
when we can't even see what's moving. Well, SOMETHING made me slam on the
brakes, and a quarter of a second later a silver car, with no lights, appears
out of the fog going about 45. Legal on a clear day, but homicidal in this
cream-of-potato fog. Then a fraction of a second later, he's followed by
a jerk TAILGATING him, this time in a white car, AGAIN with no lights.

Better safe than sorry, folk. If there's ANY doubt in your mind
that ANY color car at ANY angle under ANY possible condition on that day
may be the least bit hard to see, put 'em on. The life you save may be
your own! And if it's not ... well, how would you deal with having just
killed or crippled someone?

I wonder if either of those turkeys has been run over by a garbage
truck yet? Or hit a schoolbus?
