In recent articles on net.auto, one writer complained about Reagen breaking his "promise" to do something about the 55 MPH limit. Another writer questioned whether he promised this. In fact, elimination of the federal 55 MPH limit was a blank in the 1980 Republican platform. Realistically, though, it is unreasonable to expect Reagen to do anything. He is a typical politician, primarily interested in public image. He also came out against the propposed mandatory drinking age of 21 (which follows a blackmail approach similar to that of the 55 MPH limit), but changed his mind a few days later. Presumably his aides warned him that coming out against a motherhood issue would hurt his image. -- Mike^Z Zaleski@Rutgers [allegra!, ihnp4!] pegasus!mzal
