[net.followup] HEPA filter followup

A few weeks ago I submitted a request regarding HEPA filters.
I have received two responses. The following is my request
along with the two responses. I am also interested in more
responses if anyone has more information.

The HEPA (High Efficiency Particulate Air) type of air filter
has been recommended to me as a fairly effective filter. The
type recommended was said to be in the $400-500 range. A recent
Consumer Reports article reviewed one that was I think around
$125.

I am interested in reviews on the utility of this type of filter
for a small office including effectiveness, noise levels, and
maintenance. Also where does one buy them (especially in
San Diego).

We purchased a Norelco model 9000 (not a HEPA unit, but recommended by CR
up with the HEPAs) several months ago and have been pleased with it. One
does have to replace the filters very frequently to keep the thing at peak
efficiency however.

A side note - as part of my job I spend considerable time in class 100 and
class 10 clean rooms. The cleanliness is obtained with HEPA filters - VERY
expensive filters at that. The rooms offer an immediate cure for my hay
fever, but to duplicate one would require about $1000 - $2000/sq ft!

I am in the midst of a similar quest.
Two sources I've found so far are :

Bio-Tech Systems (800) 621-5545 mail order from Chicago
Their catalog lists three HEPA filters priced at $139, $239, and $395.

Vitaire Corp. (201) 473-2244 (in NJ)
sent me specs on their H-200 model. I haven't checked on the price yet.

The Allergy Self-Help Book (from Prevention magazine) lists a few
other sources which I have yet to check out.

I missed the Consumer Reports review and would be very curious about the
results.

[I don't have that issue but as I recall an HEPA was ranked about third,
at a cost of about $125. I think they said it worked nearly as well as
the highly rated combination ion/filter units on smoke and even better
on dust.]
