I would be interested in the amount of usage other people are seeing
for their catalogs from users at other institutions via the Internet.

Here is a report on the activity for the LCMARC database that Data Research
made available to Internet researchers without charge (through Dec 1st).

The catalog is accessible by using Telnet (VT100 or higher emulation) to
connect to the Internet host DRA.COM [192.65.213.43]. Yes, you have to be
on an Internet host, interactive logins don't work across BITNET. Additional
details are available via anonymous FTP (username: anonymous, password: guest)
from DRA.COM [192.65.213.43] in the file DRAINFO:LC_CATALOGING.TXT.

During September 1990 there were Internet 617 sessions, the average time
logged onto the catalog was 7 minutes, Min 22 seconds, Max 18 hours (there
is now a 5 minute inactivity timeout).

The peak number of simultaneous Internet sessions was 4.

Peak active Sessions 1 2 3 4 Other
Times Occurred 473 104 28 2 10

The peak monthly usage occurred on the 2 days immediately after the announcement
was made with over 100 sessions on each of those days.

network router was down these days

Remaining sessions are from Sept 1-9 before the public announcement.

The peak weekly usage was on Thursdays.

The peak daily usage occurred from 10-11 in the morning and 1-2 in the
afternoon (Central Time).

For the terminally curious, the system resources consumed for the OPAC client
only, does not include the database server which is hiding out on a different
machine.

Mail comments, or suggestions to CATALOG@DRA.COM, that's me. I'm with the
Software Development Group, so I don't know anything about money.
