Footnotes: ---------- * New entry (0) This is pretty incredible. But the car had a 429 Super Cobra Jet, balanced and blueprinted, etc. 600 HP at rear wheels, 2.70 final drive. I know the Ford 429 Boss is rated at 570 HP, so this is perhaps not unreasonable. Basically, this fellow's car is set up much like a NASCAR racer, and we know that those guys can move. (1) I assume that the "Daemon" is some sort of Canadian car. While I am not contesting the 140 mph figure, I do note that in cases where cars are modified (specifically where the rear axle ratio has been changed) speedo figures become extremely inflated. (2) The author of this message was unsure of the year. I am not sure if they even made the GTX in 1966. (I am no MOPAR freak) (3) The author notes that the top speed for the Colt is supposedly 106-110. He suggests tailwind or possible speedo error. (4) If the Superbird has a Hemi, this figure might not be unreasonable. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Big news: We broke 120 with a couple of mph to spare! O.K. There were 24 new entries and the average speed was 126 mph. Combined with our old data, this gives us an average of 122.6 mph-a good 4 mph up from last time! Got quite a large input from German cars this round. Got one challenge on the 135mph RX-3. Seems one reader just won't swallow it. Note that I threw out all entries under 100 MPH. (Unless someone is interested in a list of the cars with the LOWEST top speed) This affected our average very slightly, as there was only a single posted entry. See you in traffic court! Better yet, send me YOUR top speed. (Please include as much data as possible so that some statistician can tell us some interesting facts about speeds as realated to year, make of car, location, etc. (signed) Speed Racer disclaimer: I would NEVER advocate the illegal act of operating one's vehicle beyond the maximum permissible velocity as specified by the Federal Government. Such an act, as well as being ILLEGAL, is DANGEROUS and LIFE THREATENING, demonstrates an IRRESPONSIBLE ATTITUDE towards the CONSERVATION of our PETROLEUM RESOURCES, as well as CONTRIBUTING to the DEGRADATION of our ATMOSPHERE. 'nuff said!

*** REPLACE THIS LINE WITH YOUR MESSAGE *** <<< I love that line, why would I want to replace it >>> >The NEW, UPDATED and LONG AWAITED LIST IS HERE!!! > >Speed (mph) Vehicle Location Notes >----------- ------- -------- -------- >162 * 70 Ford Torino Kansas "timed by Kansas Hwy Patrol" (0) >143 * Porsche 928 "same as manufacture's top spd" I believe I can top that 162. I presume we are talking about high speed on legal roads, and not strip speeds. In 1978 I owned, and still do, a 1968 (** Chevrolet. **) Firebird. My uncles own a garage and race cars (quarter mile). I wanted to build one. So, we started. first, we riped out the pontiac engine. I replaced this with a 327 Chevrolet. small block (bored out). Then I installed High compression heads, pop up pistions, hydralic lifters, small high riser with a Holly 780 double pumper, and a 360 full race cam. We also did assorted other upgrades but, that is too much to talk about( I don't want to give all the secrets). Well on nite (late) I was starting a long drive that I was not in the mood for. So while I was doing 70mph on IH35 leaving San Antonio, I noticed that I was approaching Selma ( the ass hole of Texas). The question now was to speed up or slow down. I sped up. My speedometer registers 165 before it buries the needle. I do not know how fast I was going, just that it was over 165. I do not know which to classify this under pont. or Chevrolet.? I will let you figure it out. david@ut-sally ps: 55 sucks! pss: Get out of my way or we'll both die!
