I've been trying to compile some of the programs in the comp.sources.x
and I keep running into the same problem. I work on an Apollo DN3500
with SR10.2 and HP/Apollo's version of X11R3. When I try to compile an
application, it seems that half the time the compiler fails because one
header (.h) file or another wasn't found. Now, I understand why it
can't find the R4 headers, but I don't understand why Apollo distributes
the Athena Widget set library without the Athena Widget set headers. I
would sure like someone to explain to me the reasoning behind Apollo's
  decision.

Apollo does ship the Athena widget include files. In r3 they were in the
X11/include directory, and in r4 they were moved to X11/include/Xaw. If you
want to compile and run r4 clients on your Apollo, you need to install the
r4 include files (including the Athena widget include files) and libraries.
You can get a compiled and linked shared x11r4 library by ftp from
dabo.ifs.umich.edu. The include files you'll have to get from the MIT
distribution.
