Archive-site: scam.berkeley.edu [128.32.138.1] Archive-directory: /src/games/gb Reposted-by: emv@math.lsa.umich.edu (Edward Vielmetti) Announcing the all new and improved GB 3.0 official *real* game! I have room for 28 eager players to play this latest version of GB. The game will have mesomorphic races using the new' collective intelligence' rule (WARNING: for experienced players only): 1) Mesomorph - A player can request to be a 'mesomorphic' race. Although not generally very intelligent, they do have the advantage of a much higher fighting ability, adventurism, birthrate (or 'infection rate' for mesos) and only have 1 sex. They can also take over the bodies of their victims. A well run mesomorphic player can be a formidable foe. 5) Intelligence - The raw growth rate of technology is goverened by the race's intelligence. The technology increase per update is IQ/100. Additional technology boosts for a race is controlled by technology investments by the individual planets under the player's control. The intelligence of a mesomorph is related to the races total population, a sort of collective intelligence. Specifically, IQ = 200* [ (2/PI) atan(population)/50000]^2. It is usually a good idea to take advantage of the 'technology investment' option to keep pace with more intelligent racial types. The game will have limited resource production (GM settable option): In LIMITED resource mode the total amount of resources available at a planet is finite and players obtain resources by mining the resources. Specifically the chance of sector producing resources during an update is the efficiency while the number of resources mined is the metabolism. Players may construct 'quarry' objects which can be used to also mine resources. It should be noted however that quarry objects may produce toxicity while in operation. This is the default mode in v3.0. Races will also have a morale level: Morale represents the willingness of your race to be successful in battle. The morale of race depends on its success in colonization as well as combat situations. As the morale of a race increases, it becomes more effective against other races in combat. Each race starts of with a morale of 0. Each update, each race receives 1 morale point for each colony. Morale points are cumulative. Players also receive morale points for capturing alien occupied and destroying or capturing alien ships: +1 capture an alien occupied sector -1 lose a sector in land combat +cost capture/destroy an alien ship -cost lose ship to an alien +1/update for each colony During assault/capture and land combat morale between forces is compared and the 'morale factor' is computed which modifies attack/defense strengths. Morale factor is given by 1 1 morale_factor = -- Arctan(x) + -- PI 2 where x=(morale difference)/10000. There are also a number of other minor tweaks and bug-fixes so things should run smoothly. Also, MOVEMENT SEGMENTS will occur EVERY HOUR THROUGHTOUT THE GAME REGARDLESS OF THE UPDATE INTERVAL. Therefore, DON'T SIGN UP unless you want to play. Updates will probably start at 3 hours and go to 6 hours after a week (we will see depending on how many players enroll). PLEASE, NO BROWSERS. There will be a guest race (password 'guest') for that. IF you do want to play, then e-mail your password, race name, race preference (see below), planet preference (NO GAS RACES), and sector preference to 'vancleef@pooh.caltech.edu'. The machine will be 'pooh.caltech.edu' (131.215.48.30) and the port will be 2010.
