[net.auto] curb knockers

I've always assumed that people with those things are the blind drivers.
For additional proof that the blind have taken to the road - visit a
recently built parking garage. Note the braille indicating floor 
numbers for the elevator. These new cars that speak offer even more
evidence (why does someone who can see need to be told the lights are on?). 
I guess they just got tired of walking around with those dogs and sticks....
and if public transit in your city is like it is here in New York, they
are safer on the road.
