Subject: What's the best value in Radar Detectors? Well, I think it's been a week or two since anyone asked about what the best radar detector is these days, so here goes... I'm about to buy a radar detector. What I'm interested in is how the new generation of detectors hold up in real life against the well known Escort. Car&Driver and Road&Track ranked the Spectrum Whistler and the Bel Micro Eye very highly, and both of those appeal to me. What concerns me about the Escort is that it's been around for so long, maybe it's a bit outdated? (ie, it has an analog meter) Another thing about the Escort (and the new Passport) is that they're available only from the factory, at list price. Most of the others are available locally, or heavily discounted from mail-order firms. (ie, the Spectrum Whistler is available for around $200, but lists for about $260.) The Passport is nice, but it's $100 more than the Whistler, and there's a *long* waiting list. Is it worth $100 more? Is it worth a several month wait? Any advice or info would be appreciated. Mail or post, I don't care. Rob Gardner {ihnp4,hplabs,hpbbn}!hpfcla!rdg Hewlett Packard or hpfcla!rdg@hplabs Fort Collins, Co. 80525

Buy the Passport. It is THE best radar detector I've ever had. I owned an Escort for three years, and it saved my a** more times than I care to remember. I only got caught once in that time, and that was from a helicopter trap on the Garden State Parkway. Mark
