Does anyone have any experience purchasing those surplus/used jeeps the government/military disposes of? 1) How much do they run? Where does one get them? 2) Would you explain your direct experiences with it? 3) Anyone tried to insure one of them? I'm inquiring for a friend, but would be interested in any comments. -- Brett Fleisch University of California Los Angeles 3804 Boelter Hall Los Angeles, CA 90024 Phone: (213) 825-2756, (213) 474-5317 brett@ucla-cs.ARPA or ...!{cepu, ihnp4, trwspp, ucbvax}!ucla-cs!brett -------------------------------------------------------------------------

I am also interested in buying one myself, I heard that they remove something from the jeep that does'nt make it run. I don't know how true it was but the prices that they sell for it could'nt be that bad. ..!kcm Keith MacKinnon Cybermation inc. 377 Putnam Ave. Cambridge MA. 02139

Most of the jeeps, probably 99%, are nothing more than junk. The price you will have to pa for one is way out of line for it's quality. Further, as far as I can remember, jeeps are not fitted with the required environmental controls needed to pass most state inspections. This will mean a further cost to you to make it usable. Most od the ones I have seen at auction were only good for using as planters. The military tends to run the things until they drop. (Disregard typos). T. C. Wheeler

The path program on my system could not find the author, when I tried to reply, so I'm posting a followup. I would stay away from surplus Jeeps now. Long gone is the time you could get real surplus Jeeps from the Army. ie. Willys and Jeep Corp. military versions. There are no civilian versions of the Mutt and other small four wheel drives that the Army uses now. Before you could just remove the 24 Volt electrical systems on the military versions and replace them with corresponding 12 Volt civilian systems. Here is a list of the older military Jeeps and their civilian counterparts: MB ---> CJ2A M38 ---> CJ3A M38A1 ---> CJ5 (1955 - 1965 4 cyl.) Parts are still readily available for the CJ (Civilian Jeep) and therefore can be used to maintain the older military versions too.
