My favorite solution to tailgating 18-wheelers is this: simply slow down slowly. I don't hit my brakes, and it is not at all unsafe. I just slowly slow down. I only do this when the truck drive is being a real jerk - like if we're both in the fast lane, I'm already doing 65 or 70 and there's plenty of room in the right (one or more) lane(s). The reason this works is simple if you've ever driven a large 18-wheeler tractor. There are LOTS of gears. It takes considerable effort for a truck driver to downshift from 65 or 70 to 40 or 45. And if you catch him when he's winding up to go up the next hill on the grade, he'll be REALLY upset. Most of the time you'll find the driver will just whip around you in another lane if he can. If he's tailgating real close and he get get around you, slow down and speed up a few times and he won't be behind you for long! I want to make it clear that I support safe, courteous driving. And most truckers are that way. Unfortunately there are always a few jerks. -- Rick Kiessig {decvax, ucbvax}!sun!idi!kiessig {akgua, allegra, amd, burl, cbosgd, decwrl, dual, ihnp4}!idi!kiessig Phone: 408-996-2399

The reason this works is If there is plenty of room in the right (one or more) lanes and the truck could pass you safely, doesn't that mean that you could safely move to the right (one or more) lanes and let the truck use the PASSING LANE. YES, THAT IS CORRECT!! THE LEFT LANE IS FOR PASSING...NOT FOR JUST GOING FAST! I believe that it has been quite a number of years since California had designated speed lanes (I'm sure somebody will correct me if I'm wrong). In any case, since it's not illegal to pass in the right lane out here, the truck could do what you suggested. HOWEVER, if you would show the courtesy of moving to the right when not passing, chances are the truck would not be a tailgating "jerk" in the first place. jeff@wjvax

And, don't go below San Antonio for sure! I would like to find you in my way some day and i'll teach you about Self-righteous crap! Who gives you the right to regulate the speed of everyone else? You should read the first part of this letter over again, and again, and again... One time my little sister had received burns over 20% of her body ,and all over her face in an explosion. With a burn time is important. Well while speeding on the way to the Hospital some ASS HOLE like YOU got his SELF-RIGHTEOUS car in my way and would not let me pass. If I had written his plates down I would Kill him! But, instead I had to just run him off the road. ( no :-) ) David, it's not too hard to tell if someone is in a _serious_ hurry. The serious speeders lean on their horns and flash blinkers and high beams. If someone does this to me, I get out of the way. My posting was aimed at the casual everyday speeder. And don't try to tell me that I can't tell the difference. As to who gave me the right to regulate the speed of everyone else, do you seriously think that cops are the only ones responsible for seeing that laws are kept? Do you just _assume_ that whoever breaks them has a good reason? Rob St. Amant ps: Your ad hominen attacks are entertaining, but don't enhance your argument. You are breaking the law, bozo. There's a law that says "Slower traffic keep right". It's even posted on the highways. However, since you probably think slower than you drive, you probably can't read the road signs. Hey Rob, I bet you drive slower than your IQ. For Californians, see Division 11, Chapter 3, Article 1, Section 21654 of the Vehicle Code (no copyright, of course): a) Notwithstanding the prima facie speed limits, any vehicle proceeding upon a highway at a speed less than the normal speed of traffic moving in the same direction at such time shall be driven in the right-hand lane for traffic or as close as practicable to the right-hand edge or curb, except when overtaking and passing another vehicle proceeding in the same direction or when preparing for a left turn at an intersectionor into a private road or driveway. b) If a vehicle is being driven at a speed less than the normal speed of traffic moving in the same direction at such time, and is not being driven in the right-hand lane for traffic lane for traffic or as close as practicable to the right-hand edge or curb, it shall constitute prima facie evidence that the driver is operating the vehicle in violation of subdivision (a) of this section. c) The Department of Transportation, with respect to state highways, and local authorities, with respect to highways under their jurisdiction, may place and maintain upon highways official signs directing slow-moving traffic to use the right-hand traffic lane except when overtaking and passing another vehicle or preparing for a left turn. -- I speak for myself and no one else. To those "self righteous" folk who insist on staying in the passing lane while cars may be backing up behind them trying to pass, a "kind and friendly" police officer is within the law by ticketing you for impeding the flow of traffic. Aside from being unsafe, you are opening yourself up to "attack" by various people who feel that your self righteousness is interfering with their "right" to speed :-). In any event, courtesy on the road is not the law; it is just the civilized thing to do! Of course, if people wish to offend and insult while travelling on the roads, sooner or later they may get what they deserve. jeff@wjvax

To those of you who feel that doing 55 in the left lane for a prolonged time when the right lane(s) is/are clear is OK to slow down speeders........ YOU ARE BREAKING THE LAW TOO !!!!!!!! Have you never seen the signs which say "keep right except to pass". If you hog the left lane, you encourage drivers who may not have the same regard for the law that you do to overtake on your right, thus endangering other road users, and yourself when you do decide to move right. I have several times (my own fault for staying left too long) almost been in an accident as I moved right only to find there was another driver overtaking on my right side, whom I almost crashed into. The keep right except to pass, and 'overtake only to the left of the vehicle in front' regulations benefit everyone by making it more predictable that you will be able to move right and slow down when you please. > So if I stay in the > fast lane driving, say, one mile over or under the speed limit, > tough shit to the speeders. _I'm_ not breaking the law. WRONG! In at least one state (Michigan, where I used to live) the law is that slower cars must move over to let faster ones pass regardless of speed. I know of at least a couple of cases there where drivers were ticketed for failing to move over. > Self-righteous crap, you say? I do indeed! Next, I would like to ask what you think you are doing playing two-bit traffic cop flunkie. You say that you can tell who the serious speeders are? Well, I hope your not the *asshole* that was in front of my father about 10 years ago when he was rushing me to the hospital after I had been attacked and mauled by a German shepard. My father was leaning on the horn with one hand, flashing the highbeams with his foot, and holding what was left of the right side of my face together with his other hand. We got stuck behind two jerks, one in each lane, that were forming a wall and wouldn't let anyone pass. When the guy directly in front of us saw my father going nuts (and understandibly) behind him, he simply hung his hand out the window and gave my father the finger. Why not just move over and let people pass? You may be saving a life. If people want to speed, let them. They will get what is coming to them eventually. If your going to say something like 'What about the person he'll kill?', well, what about the person that may be in danger of dying behind you? Until you are sure, and even when you are, I suggest that you play it safe and move over if possible or one of these days some truck (which is what this discussion was originally about anyway) drives over you.
