[net.auto] problems with clutch on toyota corolla

I have an 81 Toyota Corolla 5-speed. I have had to replace the clutch plate
3 times with about 5K to 10K miles between replacements. I am approaching
a 4th change and am getting tired. This car is my 3rd with manual shift
(in fact I have never owned an auto shift). In both previous cars, I
replaced the plate every 35 to 40K miles. First was a vovlo and second was
toyota corona 73. I don't think that my driving has changed so I dont
know why I am having to replace the plate so often.

Before I have the car fixed I want to know if there is any thing else in
the car such that if it is not working well, it causes the clutch to wear
out faster. IF so what are these? Is it possible or easy to install a
plate improperly so that it wears out sooner and if so can that improper
installation not be detectable in normal driving until it is too late?

Could there be something about a clutch that could be a lemon, ie not
fixable, so that the best thing is to get a whole new transmission..

Any advice would be appreciated.
