[net.auto] Speedingin Maryland and in Space

Some random thoughts on the speed limit and its enforcers:

Re Maryland rolling roadblocks: Many years ago, when the dumb 55 MPH
limit was first imposed, Kentucky used a similar ploy. In fact, my
local newspaper published (and I may still have a copy of) an aerial
photo of the rolling roadblock. Basically, it appeared to work,
but I noticed that the cars (all presumably going 55) were bunched
up with about 1 car length between them. This would of course make
for a great chain collision.

Re Space: Probably as soon as space travel is feasable, someone will
want to impose a speed limit up there too.

Re Left land law enforcers: A few people have written to net.auto
proclaiming their right to drive 55 in the left lane and law violators
be damned. I wonder how many of these people would also step in to
help someone being robbed at knifepoint or gunpoint. If you woundn't
mess with a potential psycho with a weapon, why would you mess with a
potential psycho with a 3000 pound plus weapon?
