The British >> used it in India and in North Africa (WWII). My only recollection of anything like this was that rumours were spread in India during the Raj to the effect that British ammunition contained traces of pig or cattle fat (depending on the intended target of the propaganda). As I recall, this was done not to intimidate the people the tainted ammunition was fired at, but rather to demoralize the Indian troops under British command who were doing the firing. (This occurred in the days when ammunition was opened with the teeth in the process of loading.) I also remember reading that the ancient Romans waged psychological warfare in Egypt by throwing dead cats into Egyptian fortifications. (Is anyone else disturbed by the suggestion quoted above? A few weeks ago someone left a severed pig's head on the sidewalk in front a Chabad House, a local Jewish student center here in Austin. I think most of us on the net would find that a rather disgusting act, yet here we have someone openly advocating the same sort of thing in Lebanon. Recent events are indeed giving us ample evidence that anti-Semitism is alive and well in the eighties; its emphasis has simply shifted to a different group of Semites.) --- Prentiss Riddle ("Aprendiz de todo, maestro de nada.") --- {ihnp4,harvard,seismo,gatech,ctvax}!ut-sally!riddle --- riddle@ut-sally.UUCP, riddle@ut-sally.ARPA, riddle%zotz@ut-sally
