Original-subject: Revised document on Replication + Dist Operation
Reposted-by: emv@msen.com (Edward Vielmetti, MSEN)

As promised, I have revised the "replication solution" document. It is
available for FTP - description on how to get it is appended to this message.

Let me recap what was agreed at the meeting. A number of documents were
agreed to go forward as RFCs with no (or trvial) editing.

It was agreed that this document was technically stable, agreed, and ready
to go forward. It was also agreed that it needed to be released as soon as
possible. However, some aspects of the description were not sufficently
clear. I undertook to edit a revised document immediately after the meeting
(I have slipped my deadline on this by 8 days - apologies).

The revised document will be commented on immediately. A 1 week comment
period was agreed. This gives until 7th March. After this, assuming
everyone happy, the document should be submitted as RFC. Please send
comment ASAP. The following sorts of messages are suitable replies. Please
be careful to distinguish what sort of message you are sending.

   1. Document should go forward as RFC with no changes
   2. Request for an extension of the deadline (please justify)
   3. Editorial comment, but otherwise as 1.
   4. Changes which need to be made, but otherwise as 1. (This type of
message should go to the whole list)
   5. Changes which need to be made, and justify another version of the
document being circulated for comment (and a new deadline)

No reply will be interpreted as 1. I would like to get replies from
everyone who attended the SRI meeting.

If you suggest changes, please send alternate text!

    Replication and Distributed Operations extensions
to provide an Internet Directory using X.500
    S.E. Kille
    February 1991
    Abstract:
Some requirements on extensions to X.500 are described in the
INTERNET--DRAFT [Kil90b ], in order to build an Internet Directory as
described in the INTERNET--DRAFT [Kil90a ]. This document specifies a
set of solutions to the problems raised. These solutions are based on
some work done for the QUIPU implementation, and demonstrated to be
effective in a number of directory pilots. By documenting a de facto
standard, rapid progress can be made towards a full-scale pilot.
These procedures are an INTERIM approach. There are known
deficiencies, both in terms of manageability and scalability.
Transition to standard approaches are planned when appropriate
standards are available. This INTERNET--DRAFT will be obsoleted at
	this point.
