Archive-name: news/faq/mit-faq-collection/1991-03-20 Archive-directory: pit-manager.mit.edu:/pub/usenet/ [18.72.1.58] Original-posting-by: jik@athena.mit.edu (Jonathan I. Kamens) Original-subject: archive site for periodic informational postings Reposted-by: emv@msen.com (Edward Vielmetti, MSEN) After seeing a rash of requests recently for the informational postings in various newsgroups, and after being deluged with requests to mail copies of various such postings to people after offering to do so, I have decided to set up an archive of the various informational postings in various Usenet newsgroups. I will not be putting a lot of effort into keeping the archive up-to-date in all newsgroups. However, I will keep it up-to-date in the newsgroups I read, and I am also willing to install new copies that are forwarded to me by the people who maintain them (Note: I would prefer being sent copies of actual usenet postings, with full, intact headers, because it helps me to keep track of how up-to-date what I have in the archive is, and because it makes the shell script I have to install them work better. :-). The archive is on the machine pit-manager.mit.edu (18.72.1.58). It is accessible via anonymous ftp in the directory /pub/usenet. Each subdirectory of that directory is a newsgroup name, and the files in the subdirectories are the informational postings, with filenames corresponding to their titles in an obvious way. For example, one file in the archive is /pub/usenet/news.announce.newusers/Answers_to_Frequently_Asked_Questions The archive is also accessible via mail archive server. The address of the server is mail-server@pit-manager.mit.edu. The names are the same, with the "/pub/" chopped off. To retrieve the file mentioned above, you would send mail to the mail-server with a subject or body of send usenet/news.announce.newusers/Answers_to_Frequently_Asked_Questions You can also do "send help", "send index", "send usenet/index", "send usenet/news.announce.newusers/index", etc. Comments, questions, suggestions, etc. can be sent to me at the address below, or at {root,jik,postmaster,daemon}@pit-manager.mit.edu. Feel free to mention this service in any informational postings you may maintain; I hope to keep it up and running for a while. -- Jonathan Kamens USnail: MIT Project Athena 11 Ashford Terrace jik@Athena.MIT.EDU Allston, MA 02134 Office: 617-253-8085 Home: 617-782-0710
