[net.auto] strange RX7 noises

sch@dedalus.UUCP (Steve Holzworth) (05/15/85)

Here's an unusual problem that has finally begun to bother me
enough to do something about it: my 82 RX7 GS makes a strange
depressurizing noise when I stop and shut the engine off. It only happens
during hot weather (unrelated to air-conditioning) and seems to be coming
from the rear of the car. The best way to describe it is as a sort of
whining, escaping air noise. It generally lasts only a few (10 or so)
seconds. I do know that the fuel system tends to generate suction, but
I don't think it is related. I've never heard other RX7s make the same
noise. Mine has done it pretty much since I got it in '82. Any
suggestions? I'll listen to about anything.

Sorry if this was posted twice. Our Cadmus dropped it on the floor the
first time.

					Thanks,

I have an 85 RX7-GSL-SE with less than 2,000 miles on it. I have experienced
the exact same problem you describe.
I am fairly certain the problem is a seal problem at the gas cap. Try removing
your gas cap the next time you hear the noise.
We haven't had hot enough weather lately for me to check the problem further.
When it happens again I hope to solve it. Just wanted you to know that you
aren't the only one with this problem.

What you hear is excess pressure bleading from the gas tank. It seems
that on hot days or long trips the gas tank gets warm enough to
create a lot of gas vapor. The emissions control system trys to hold
the vapors and feed them into the engine when its running. For some
reason the pressure builds up to the point that a pressure relief
valve (well,,, thats what the Mazda folks told me) opens up and
bleeds of some of the vapors. You can confirm that this is what is
happening by opening the gas cap after the noise starts, if you get
a rush of vapors followed by the noise stopping you have the problem.

Mazda has not given me any answers as to why a $14,000 car has this
rude personal habit.
