[net.auto] Honda Civic Clutch

spear@ihopb.UUCP (Steven Spearman) (05/20/85)

With only 19k miles, my '84 Civic has begun giving me a
squeal on clutch engagement. My guess is a glazed clutch,
and it seems to me that I had seen something about other
Hondas having this problem.

Does anybody know if Honda will pick up the bill for this
(the car is within the 24k power train warranty but out of
the regular 12k warranty) or have any more information on
Honda clutch problems?

Thanks IA,

I had similar sqeal coming from clutch when my '84 Civic had only
about 4K miles. My dealer told me that they were replacing the clutches
in several '84 Accords, but that problems had been reported in Civic's
as well.

Power train warranty should cover your clutch. Don't waste time. Go
talk to your dealer. I am posting this only as a reminder to other
Honda owners to turn down the stereo, roll down the window and
listen to what the car is saying before you go out of warranty.

I called my zone rep, and he said there is a known problem
with the clutch on 84 Hondas. They claim that the noise (which is
usually intermittent and only upon engagement) does not hurt the clutch
or decrease its life. You can supposedly just ignore it.

They have some replacements parts which MAY get rid of the noise,
but it is not a sure thing. Plus, if you are outside the normal
12K / 12 month warranty you may have to pay for part or all of
the the expensive (probably $300 + ) change yourself
because the clutch is a 'wear item' and is not covered by the
power train warranty. Your local district supervisor makes the
final decision about whether to pay for it - it sounds like
they would pay for part but not all if you complained enough.

I have decided I can live with this - it's just a matter of trusting
that they are telling the straight story. The noise has nothing
to do with the bearings or anything like that and may come and
go during the life of the car, according to the zone rep.
