[net.music] Van Halen's new lead singer

scooper@brl-tgr.ARPA (Stephan Cooper ) (08/08/85)

So, Van Halen is getting Sammy Hagar to become their new lead singer
assuming their respective record companies can strike a deal.
But this leaves me with a few questions:
1) Why did David Lee Roth leave?
more importantly,
2) what is Hagar's appearance going to do to VH's sound (besides vocally)?
Actaually, I look at the move optimistically. that's probably because
I enjoy the "harder" Van Halen stuff (Van Halen, VHII, especially).
Any comments? answers?

Well, according to Martha Quinn (she's SO cute!) on MTV last night, it
is because of a fued between David and Eddie. No other details were
given.

To become a big time movie star (wonder if he'll get a haircut?!?)

better yet, what is this going to do to the red rocker??

I'm not sure exactly what S.H. expects to gain from this. After all
he did have a rather loyal (and large) following on his own. Seems
as if he is retreating away from the induvidual image to a group.
Methinks he might not like it as much as he thinks.

By the way, wonder how his band is taking all this. I'll bet their pissed.

guess we'll just have to wait and see, although according
to good ole' Eddie VH we wont have to wait too long, as he and SH have been
writing stuff for the next album for quite sometime now. Also expect a rather
different VH, as Eddie is writing songs that "weren't meant to be screamed".

For a rather good idea of what Eddie thinks of Mr "showbiz" Roth try last
months rolling stone.

Who cares why he left? Just thank God he left. I never liked Dave's
vocals and always felt he was the weakest part of VH's lineup. I read
an article in Musician magazine a few months ago stating that Eddie
and Dave TV could no longer agree on the type of tracks they wanted to
do for albums. Dave was more interested in doing copy songs (Dancin'
in the Streets, Pretty Woman, and other bullshit) while Eddie was more
interested in doing new work with keyboard and guitar.

I also heard a rumor that Michael Anthony, VH's bass player, was
considering leaving the band to replace Rudy Sarzo who just recently
left Quiet Riot. I guess the guy loves to play with asshole singers.
Anyone hear anymore about this?
