A beta release of binutils version 1.8 is available.
If there are no bug reports (maybe even if there are ...),
this will be installed on prep in a few days. If you
want to check it out beforehand, you can get it by
anonymous ftp from sevenlayer.cs.wisc.edu:pub/binutils-1.8.tar.Z.
It would be considerate if you could avoid normal working hours (CST).
Also, if you try out the beta, you should be willing to
replace it by the official release soon after - unless there
are no changes :-).

This is primarily a bug fix release, though it also includes
some enhancements (such as improved support for ns32k machines).
The handling of common symbols by ld has been changed (again).

This may be the last release of binutils in its current form.
Future releases will be based on work done by Cygnus using a
Binary File Descriptor library (also to be used by gdb 4.0 and gas).
This will support multiple binary file formats, as well
as cross-linking, cross-dbugging, etc. The linker wil also be
much more configurable. I don't know when it will be ready -
it certainly isn't anywhere near ready now.
