[net.auto] old VWs and fixing them up

robg@mmintl.UUCP (Robert Goldman) (05/30/85)

I've just got a 1974 Super Beetle, which needs a bit of bodywork
done on it. I've been thinking that if I'm going to put the work in, I
would like to make it run better and look better at the same time. I know
that many people have already done such projects, and I'd very much like it
if some of you could share suggestions, stories, etc. with me.
Specifically, I'm interested in:

1. Your experiences doing bodywork. What tools did you need? Are there
any stupid mistakes I'm bound to make without experienced advice? What is
the best way to remove old rust and prevent the development of new rust?

2. What are good ways to improve the running of my Bug? What I'd really
like are suggestions for ways I can improve my Bug's performance with a
minimum of skill and expense. I would like to do the expensive, difficult
jobs, too, but I want to build up to them.

3. The names of some good books about bodywork. I have two good books on
my car (the Hayes and the Muir book), but they are mostly concerned with the
motor, transmission, etc. My engine and transmission seem mostly O.K.

4. Your good and bad experiences with VW parts suppliers. I have picked up
magazines that list many suppliers, but each one's catalog is about $3.00.
Which ones should I order?

5. I have heard that the most common cause of VW engine failures is
overheating. A friend told me it would be a good idea to add an oil cooler.
Is this true? If so, which ones are best, and how hard are they to install?

6. If you have any information, advice, funny or sad stories about Bugs
that don't fit into these categories, please tell me anyhow! I'd be
grateful for any info you can give.

Please feel free to respond to me in any way that is appropriate,
and if any of you are near New Haven or Hartford, perhaps we could get
together in person.
