Original-subject: Versions of Bash after 1.05
Reposted-by: emv@msen.com (Edward Vielmetti, MSEN)

I have been wanting a newer bash for a while. However, I understand the
troubles that plague the best of efforts, particularly when you are
trying to whomp up a "clean" release. I particularly wanted one that had
the additional whacking contributed by SGI to support running with job
control under Irix; I've been hurting for a good shell (defined as one
that has emacs-style editing of history) on our Iris for what seems like
ages now.

I saw mention in comp.sys.sgi (9104101720.AA14875@igor.tamri.com) of a
version that built well under Irix. I FTP-ed it and checked it over; it
has all the goodies I have been waiting for anxiously; it built with
almost no effort at all under Irix; it built fine under SunOS 4.1.1 on a
Sun 4, and under SunOS 3.5 on a Sun 3. It built on our Stellar GS-1000
under Stellix but wouldn't support job control there; I'm still bashing
on that, so to speak. It comes with documentation. It is the first
version I've seen that I am happy to support for all of our users,
encouraging them to switch from csh.

I recommend this version highly; it is a gorgeous piece of work by Brian
and Chet. *However*, it is not an official FSF release version -- Brian
and friends are still working on that. Bugs fixes should be mailed to
Chet or posted to gnu.bash.bug -- but in either case it is important to
mention that they apply to this "1.07.cwru" version. Chet doesn't have
time to officially support this, so releases and official patches can be
expected to be sporadic at best (so what do you want for nothing?). Chet
gave me permission to mention its existence, for those of you who are
purely unable to wait for the Real Thing.

I got mine from slc2.ins.cwru.edu via anonymous FTP, in the file
pub/bash/bash-1.07.cwru.tar.Z.

Again, here are the main points, as sent to me by Chet:

>I would not mind you pointing people to this bash, subject to the following:
>
>	o emphasize that it's not an official FSF release
>
>	o bugs and stuff should either be sent to me directly or
> posted to gnu.bash.bug with a notice that they are
> found in the CWRU version and not necessarily anywhere
> else
>
>	o I don't do this anywhere near full-time (I don't do it anywhere
> near part-time), so updates could and will be sporadic

Chet is reachable at chet@po.cwru.edu.

Thanks so much for everything, folks!
