[net.auto] Arriving back home.

beard@unc.UUCP (David Beard) (06/06/85)

Because of rock climbing, backpacking, fishing, hunting, etc., I
often find myself and vehicle forty miles from any paved road, let
alone any major tool inventory, spare parts bin, hoist, or other
signs of civilization.

I am interested in the net.auto's thoughts on:
1.	What debilitating break downs might I expect to have happen
to my vehicle? My interest is in problems that will keep me
from arriving home from my trip - on time.

2.	What sorts or tools, parts, etc. should I carry? Keep in
	mind that I can't spend the money for a $15K Snap-On setup
But want to have enough. What do you carry?

3.	What sorts of vehicles might help minimize these BIG problems?
A very rough start might be to include heavy duty everything
( cooling, elec., springs, 3/4 frame, etc), and minimal-to-no
power gear ( power stearing, breaks air, seats, back-side
warmers, et. al) on the theory that "if it ain't there, it
can't break down," but all this is a bit platitudinous.

Besides comments on general features( or non-features) of
vehicles, I would also like information on specific vehicles
with which neters have had experience.

4. Finally, what sort of information and skills are useful?
	This includes shop manuals, etc.

Obviously, These general questions are much too big - specific
recomendations require much more knowledge about the specific tasks
and users of the vehicle and tools. Skill of the user seems to be
particularly important - the expert might hate the black box which is
the salvation of the novice. In short, "THE ANSWER" might exist for
only one person and situation, but all your individual solutions and
comments, should help me in finding mine.

Thanks for your aid in advance - dvb
