I quote the following from the Thursday, June 6 1985 issue of the San Francisco Chronicle (page 9): --------------------- SPEED LIMIT INCREASED OKD Sacramento A Senate resolution sponsored by the California Highway Patrol urging the federal government to lift the 55 mile-per-hour speed limit won endorsement from the Assembly Transportation Committee yesterday. The CHP has been seeking higher speed limits on rural freeways because 49 percent of drivers in the state exceed the legal speed limit. It was noted that the CHP might better spend its time checking on drunken drivers than monitoring speeding motorists.
